Düsseldorf is host to some 200 concert-quality organs, as well as the IDO festival (International Düsseldorf Organ Festival) which presents about 50 concerts every year over the course of 5 weeks. To celebrate the festival’s 20th anniversary, Philara Collection and IDO present “Modular Organ System”, an immersive, walk- through sound installation by the Berlin based duo Phillip Sollmann & Konrad Sprenger. For three months they transform the former glassworks of Philara into a resonant space where tonal intensification and spatial tension become an engulfing physical experience — intense, profound and powerful. While the sound source is indeterminate and often invisible, the microvariations, static fields, resonances and superimposed frequencies meet the visitor every step of the way. The impressive installations, meterlong fiberglass funnels, actual organ pipes as well as modular sound generators, are emitting, pulsing, pumping and/or rotating. Bouncing sound off walls, floor, roof and corners, they create a sensory ocean of sound waves meeting and weaving in with one another. Both artists choosing to work under adopted names for various projects, Phillip Sollmann, alias ‘Efdemin’ is a resident DJ at Berghain, Berlin and composer and music producer Konrad Sprenger’s civilian name is Joerg Hiller. —Uscha Pohl
